Simple Steps to Create HDR environment in Vray for SketchUp

this is what normal rendering without the use of HDR image to create background environment looks like. Just normal render setting with vraysunlight as the source of light.

I'll show 8 simple step to do a HDRi rendering.

Set the material M for GI Color.

Set it to TexBitmap from the slide down on the left, and choose the material

in File.

the image file must be in .HDR format, usually about 50mb++.

which i'll provide the link for the images later in this tutorial.

set the UVW Type to UVWGenEnvironment, and set the mapping

type to Spherical.

apply the same settings for BG color's material M.

and because by using HDR image for the light source that are not as intense as

VraySunlight, we have to adjust the shutter speed much slower than previously set.

for this one i set it to 10.0 (400.0 for the previous setting).

and then press RENDER and see the result.

OK HERES THE THING THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE .HDR THAT IVE BEEN

USING FOR THIS TUTORIAL.

the .HDR image should look like this when you opened it up in Photoshop,

usually the image will be in 32bit, which means that you can tweak the exposure of it.

the file size of the image is huge at least 40mb in size .

for this tutorial i use 6000x2900 image 50.7mb in size.

I've been lucky enough to get a hand to tryout an awesome software LUMION 3D.

very suitable if you try to make an animation out of your sketchup model. quite fast (depending on your rig of coz :D)

but still unmatched to the power of vray :)

very fast to produce, equipped with their own set of 3d library which is awesome!!. especially on the vegetation parts. the picture i attached below doesnt have any PS work in it, just fresh out of the software. did not require much time spent learning on it. Pretty good tool for someone who need their job done quickly. and the best part is....... IT ... CAN... PRODUCE .... AN... ANIMATION... quite fast comparing other regular 3d rendering software

Tips on keeping your rendering crash free!

#1 keep your texture image or file small. Ever wonder why your rendering keep on crashing or freezes before it could ever complete? the size of the images used for the texture in your model do consume RAM during render, so its best to put your image file small below 500kb should be enough.

#2 show only necessary model or polygon before hitting the R button. keep your models and components in layers, and keep em organize so that it wont be a sore for your tired eyes. If you want to produce an exterior render, hide anything that isn't significantly important to be in the scene (ie; interior furniture)

#3 keep your model neat and delete any unnecessary components. Be smart people, your PC do really have a heart, if you give em lotsa crap and you will get lotsa time wasted rendering lotsa unnecessary crap too.

#4 lastly, there is always something that can be done to boost up your sketch up app. Its like a vitamin for your software(sketch up). a patch up utilities software that would boost your software RAM usage up to 4GB instead of until it reaches 2GB and crash.

ntcore.com 4GB patch (use it at your own risk ).

sometimes whenever there is a need to do a very fast 3d modeling and render, I usually use the same template(in this case the file that already completed with setting and ready to render).
open the file and create the new set of model inside the existing file, so the setting of previous render options still intact. Especially the lighting setting can be used all over again maybe with a little bit of touches (ie: lighting colour and so on).

I'll share my file(interior render) it might not be the best setting, but it gives a considerably good result... and I always use it as a template for my regular interior rendering, save the time to 'try and error' the setting and see the result that is desirable to me( cause my pc is not very fast).

Making Materials

The material editor can be opened from the toolbar or by going to Plugins> V-Ray for SketchUp> Material Editor. With the right mouse button (RMB), click on the "Scene Materials" materials can be imported, added new or purged unused materials. A material can based on four layer types - emissive, reflection, diffuse and refraction. A layer type can contain unlimited layers. All layers are in order like placed on the material from top to down. The default material contain one active diffuse layer. Additional layers can be placed per RMB click on a layer type and choosing Add New Layer. The preview window dosn't show the current selected material, it show the last rendered preview.

All example renderings are done in full adaptive mode and noisethreshold 0.02 (good preview quality).

Its Very Hard to Achieve Realism.....

i thought if i put a lot of component into one model , it will somewhat able to make the rendering to be much more realistic. But it still is not enough...

and also by putting tons of polygons in to sketchup will surely crippled the ability to manoeuvre the camera to further operate the software... and the best way is put it into layers!!... lots of layers

its hard to render on a high scene model especially with sketchup. What im doing here is i just render it part by part (this is the first part). and it is also very hard to render a night scene especially the light effect that come out from the building. Still bother me until now, How to achieve a great night scene rendering? without using the method of try and error which consume hugh amount of time and resource. Clearly this field needs a lot of experience, and a great sifu.

(few mistake, you have to apply back the texture, pick any grass surface texture and modify it in vray's material option)

Arroway's textures tryout

recently i got a hand on arroway texture which amazing. and I asked myself if I could fully utilized it. At first my rendering crash. The texture is too big for sketchup to comprehend. After a little tweak, make the texture files smaller to 1-2 mbs (the original is about 10 mbs and more, and in png format).

looking forward to use this textures for the future projects.

i use this setting often and i hope it could help. I could just post the visopt setting but for the sake of learning i post this pic. just apply your texture to your model without any need to further modifying the vray material setting.

few mistake here......on the shutter speed setting if you want your rendered picture to be brighter increase the value of it not decrease, again sorry for the mistake..

Tutorial: Simple Steps to Create Water in Vray for Sketch-Up

1. first of all create a rectangular box just like the pic above. And then create a rectangular plane and dont forget to GROUP it.

2.Usually when installing vray for sketchup there is a default set of materials given with the installer. So the easiest way for me is to create a new material from an imported ones.

3.choose Glass.vismat as it is best resembles the refraction and reflection quality that the water material needed.
4. click on the m to assign a displacement map. and before that ticked on the displacement and keep continuity boxes.
5.set on noise option and change the default size amount because the default value is too small to resembles the ripple effect of the water need. and if the final rendering produces inappropriate size relative to the surrounding area, all you have to do is change the value.
6.apply it to the material
7. this is what it look like after apllying the material to the plane
8. notice the rendering doesnt show enough displacement for us to see the 'ripple' on the water.
the amount of displacement can be change in the Option menu on vray bar.
9. change the default value.
10. then render it again.and you can see the changes.

This is all done with Sketch-Up added with few plugins and rendered in Vray. Who says that complex model cant be created from sketch-up. All you need is determination :)
